MARSHALL ISLANDS COASTAL MANAGEMENT AGENT ID# 222595

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawaii Sea Grant College Program, located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Physical work location will be in Majuro, Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) at the College of the Marshall Islands (CMI). Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY: Salary commensurate with qualifications.

DUTIES: Works with natural resource management agencies and other members of the Coastal Management Advisory Council to help with the review and assessment of terrestrial and nearshore land use projects and policy, land use planning, and coastal and marine hazards mitigation in relation to shoreline protection and disaster risk reduction (primary), and conservation resource management (secondary). Works with the public and private sector to identify land use and building practices in order to reduce disaster risks, promote community resilience, and support conservation of marine and coastal resource management activities. Conducts site visits and writes technical reports and provides technical extension assistance to diverse stakeholders. Assists with the development, facilitation, and implementation of research and planning projects. Teaches one course annually at CMI that is related to coastal resource management.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/TRAINING Masters Degree from an accredited college or university in Ocean or Earth Science, Coastal Engineering, or Island Biogeography with major coursework in coastal processes or land use, ocean policy, integrated coastal management, natural resource or ecosystem management or planning, or related field.
EXPERIENCE At least three (3) years of successful experience in Cooperative Extension work, Sea Grant Extension work, or equivalent in research relevant to coastal processes.
KNOWLEDGE Knowledge of computer programs. Basic knowledge of coral reef ecology with advanced knowledge of the role of coral reefs in providing shoreline protection ecosystem services.
ABILITIES & SKILLS Skilled in facilitation and experience with collaborative research and outreach projects. Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-lingual setting in independent roles.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds. Must have exceptional skin-diving skills, and able to free-dive to 8 m and carry out basic underwater photography as needed to support agency, academic, and non-governmental organization partners in their assessment or education activities.
POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawaii's and/or business entity's policies and procedures. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
PhD from an accredited college or university in Ocean or Earth Science, Marine Biology, Engineering, or Geography with major coursework in biological sciences, coastal processes or land use, coastal science, ocean policy, coastal zone management, natural resource or ecosystem management or planning or related field. Fluency in Marshallese. Previous experience in international coastal management and policy. Experience working in the Pacific small-island developing states an asset, with experience on atolls. Knowledge and experience with cross-cultural collaboration. Familiarity with and ability to analyze data and information related to coastal processes and hazards, including climate change and oceanographic data, and familiarity with statistical methods of interpreting these data. Familiarity with basic surveying and mapping techniques. Familiarity with island shoreline characteristics and cultural/recreation practices including: historical shoreline erosion rates and trends, seasonal wave dynamics, coastal processes and hazards, and wave reef interactions. Familiarity with common coastal hazard mitigation strategies and impacts on natural resources from resource extraction and restoration operations, beach erosion and formulation, littoral budgets, and impacts of alternative shore stabilization technologies and situations. Previous experience in international coastal management and policy. Experience working in the Pacific small-island developing states an asset, with experience on atolls. Knowledge and experience with cross-cultural collaboration.
